When the mind runs faster than the body - Ramanujan, Nightingale and the cost of asymmetric cognition There is a way people talk about genius that has always felt slightly off to me. Not completely wrong. Just incomplete. We talk about a mind as if it burns brighter than everyone else’s. We talk about impossible output, strange insight, early pattern recognition, the person who “just saw it” before other people could. Then the story gets polished into something almost supernatural. But no system produces extra output for free. If something runs hotter than expected, something is carrying the heat. That might be sleep. It might be health. It might be social stability. It might be translation. It might be the body. And that is the part the mythology usually edits out. The finished work gets preserved. The theorem, the diagram, the reform, the letter, the breakthrough. What gets less attention is the operating condition that made it possible, and the cost of keeping that condition alive for too long. So this is not really an essay about “genius” . It is an essay about overclocking. What happens when a mind can generate structure faster than the body, the institution, or the surrounding life can support? A quick boundary Before going further, I want to be clear about what I am not doing. I am not trying to diagnose historical figures. I am not saying Ramanujan had ADHD, or Florence Nightingale was autistic, or that every unusually productive person from history maps cleanly onto a modern label. That kind of retrospective diagnosis gets slippery very quickly. We do not have enough information. We have fragments, letters, biographies, cultural context, myths, medical uncertainty and later interpretation. But we can still ask a different question. Not: what would their diagnosis be today? More like: what operating pattern can we see? Because across history, some people appear to show a similar shape: intense internal processing, unusual abstraction, poor fit with the systems around them, difficulty translating what they see, bodily cost, and recognition that often arrives late. Modern language around autism, ADHD, AuDHD, monotropism and hyperfocus gives us a lens for some of these patterns, but the label is not the main point. Research does show that autistic and ADHD traits can overlap, and recent work on monotropism and hyperfocus treats intense attentional capture as relevant across autistic and ADHD- related profiles. Still, the safer question is structural. What happens when someone is not simply “more intelligent” , but unevenly routed? Overclocking is not magic In computing, overclocking means pushing a processor beyond its default operating range. You get more performance, but the rest of the system has to carry it. More heat. More power demand. More instability. More need for cooling. Human cognition is not a CPU, so the analogy has limits. But it is useful if we use it carefully. Some people seem to overclock cognitively. They can hold unusual structures in mind. They move quickly between domains. They see patterns before they can explain the steps. They can produce an amount of work that looks impossible from the outside. But overclocking does not create free capacity. It moves the cost. Sometimes that cost is obvious: exhaustion, insomnia, shutdown, illness, social rupture.
